Build 68. Boot Carpet and Washer Bottle
I've gone for full carpets, they just make the whole car feel much nicer to me otherwise it is all just to much of a tin can. Most people on the forums generally say don't bother with the floor carpets in the cockpit, but that's a discussion for elsewhere.
Prior to this step I'd had all the carpets laid flat on a shelf for some time in the garage, so they we all ready to fit. The first step is to fix all the little triangles to the rear bulk head, I simply laid them out on the worktop once I knew where they went and dry fitted each one before gluing them with spray adhesive. I'd got quite a lot of control over the spray now so I decided to give a light spray on the metal panel as well as the back of the carpet pieces. Some pieces did need some slight trimming which will be different for every build.
Once I'd done the rear bulkhead, I worked my way around each side to the back of the car. You will need to loosen the fuel tank cover here so you can get the carpet down the sides properly. At this point you need to know where you will be mounting the washer bottle, the general consensus is to mount the bracket with the bolt that holds the rear wing in place on the side of the boot, so that's what I did.
I tested the position along side the fuel filler cover to ensure it all fits. Once I was happy I dry fitted the carpet again (on both sides) and marked where all the bolts would be using masking tape and a pen. I then punched out the holes in the carpet, removed the bolts and dry fitted again. The bolts will be holding this carpet in place so I only put a light bit of adhesive on the end parts that needed it. I also ordered some replacement bolts and washers in matt black to finish off the job.
Once I was happy with the sides covered in carpet, I then put the base carpet in, which needed trimming in a fair few places for it to lay flat. I used masking tape to mark where I would cut and repeated as necessary. I intend to leave this carpet loose to allow access in the future beneath. I did actually use some spare Duramat on the wooden part too because it sat slightly lower than the aluminium shelf. This, as well as adding some more sound proofing, made the carpet floor sit nice and flush.
Here's how it looks in there now. Note that I'm still waiting for the bolts to arrive that I ordered to finish it off. I basically ordered 3 replacement M5x20mm bolts in black A4 grade, and 3 M5x20mm penny washers also in black A4 grade (From Accu). On some builds you may need to order 5 as they have 3 bolts for the rear wings each showing in the boot, my lower bolt was just inline with the floor so I covered them with carpet, which is easily accessed if necessary. You also don't need to order a replacement for where the washer bottle will go.
